Music channels — genres and ways of using them

The music category holds 14 channels: Turkish pop and music-video channels, the MTV streams split by era, and Russian-language and international genre channels. This page sets out which channel suits which taste and which use.

14 music channelsAn uninterrupted video streamSuited to background listening

Music channels are the least talked about part of an IPTV package, and the part that is left open the longest. The reason is simple: these channels are not opened to be watched but, most of the time, to be background — while the housework is done, when guests come, at work. Below we have split the channels by genre and written down which one suits which purpose. Channel names belong to their respective rights holders.

The difference between a music-video channel and a music app

If you have a music app on your phone, why would you need a music channel? The difference is in the burden of choosing. In an app you decide what to listen to — that is a small piece of mental work every time. On a music-video channel the choosing has been done by an editor: you open it and the stream carries on.

A big screen

A music-video channel uses the television screen — the music takes part as picture as well as sound. There is no comparison with a phone speaker.

An uninterrupted stream

The list never ends and you never have to pick the next track. No need to dry your hands in the middle of the housework.

Discovery

An app repeats the taste you are used to. On a music-video channel you come across a performer you do not know by chance — the logic of radio.

Using them as background music

Part of our subscribers open the music channels precisely as background. There is one practical advantage to that: if the television is on anyway, no extra device and no extra speaker is needed.

  • Housework and cooking — an energetic stream (NRJ Hits, Power TV) matches the pace.
  • Guests and birthdays — Power TV and Kral TV are the safe choice for a mixed audience: songs everybody knows.
  • A workout — Trace Urban and NRJ Hits suit it because of the steady tempo.
  • A quiet evening — the tempo is gentler on the MTV 80s and MTV 90s retro streams.
  • A workplace or an office — a music-video channel also works as a picture backdrop with the sound off; it is worth choosing a stream that is calm on the eye.
For a cafe, a salon or a shop

In a commercial space several screens run at the same time, so a standard single-device subscription is not enough. In such cases we calculate by the number of screens — see the corporate subscription page. In cafes and waiting rooms, news and sports channels are opened just as often as music channels.

Quality: what to pay attention to on a music channel

On music channels the picture quality is secondary — what matters is that the sound does not break up. One feature of IPTV works in your favour here: music channels need less bandwidth than sports channels, because there is little fast camera movement in a music video.

  • An HD stream is entirely enough for music channels — there is no sense in looking for 4K.
  • If the sound breaks up, the cause is usually the network rather than the channel: check for a download on the same network.
  • If your television's audio settings have a «music» mode, select it — the channel's audio mix suits it.
  • If it will be left on for a long time, lowering the screen brightness is good for the television's lifespan.

General information on bandwidth requirements is in the channels overview, and the installation per device is on the installation page.

Music channels and the other categories

Music is not limited to these 14 channels. Concert broadcasts sometimes appear on the general channels, and music documentaries sit in the documentary category — for productions about the lives of performers, looking at the documentary channels gets you further. Music films and concert recordings, meanwhile, are searched for in the VOD archive.

Frequently asked questions

Which music channels are available?

The music category lists 14 channels: Kral TV, Number One TV, Power TV, Power Türk, Dream Türk, MTV Hits, MTV Live, MTV 90s, MTV 80s, Trace Urban, NRJ Hits, RU TV, Bridge TV and Muz TV. The Russian category also has the Муз ТВ and Bridge TV HD variants.

Which are the Turkish music channels?

There are five Turkish streams: Kral TV and Number One TV carry current Turkish pop hits, Power Türk offers a broader Turkish selection (pop and rock), Power TV leans towards international hits, and Dream Türk is in the rock and alternative genre. To leave on as background for hours, Power Türk is the most balanced option.

Is there a retro music channel?

Yes — MTV 90s and MTV 80s are retro video streams split by era. Their advantage as background is that the tempo is gentler and the songs are familiar, so they do not pull attention away. For a mixed age group at a gathering they are a good choice.

How much bandwidth does a music channel need?

An HD stream is enough — 8–10 Mbps. Music channels need less bandwidth than sports channels, because there is little fast camera movement in a music video. There is no practical benefit in looking for a 4K stream: what matters is that the sound does not break up, and that depends on network stability.

Can I broadcast a music channel in a cafe or a salon?

Technically yes, but because several screens run at the same time in a commercial space, a standard single-device subscription is not enough. We calculate individually by the number of screens — see the corporate subscription page, or send us the number of screens on WhatsApp.

Are the music channels included at extra cost?

No, there is nothing extra to pay. All 12 categories — music among them — sit inside one subscription. We do not sell a «music package» separately. The only difference between packages is the term: 1 month 13 AZN, 6 months 60 AZN, 12 months 90 AZN. In other words, whoever buys the cheapest package sees every one of the music channels. The figures are written out openly on the prices page, and there are no hidden charges.
