News channels — source variety and live broadcasting

The news category holds 16 channels, and on top of that there are the HEVC streams of the Turkish news channels. This page explains why source variety matters and why a live broadcast arrives a few seconds late.

16 news channelsFour languages, five countriesHEVC: less bandwidth

When choosing a news channel the main question is not «which channel is better». The main question is this: how many different sources can I see the same event from. The package holds news channels in four languages and from five broadcasting regions — this page gathers them in one place. Channel names belong to their respective rights holders; we take no position on newsrooms, we only show the available broadcasts.

16 news channels

The channels fall into four groups by origin: local, Turkish, international and Russian-language.

Why one news channel is not enough

Every news channel frames an event by its own editorial rules: which story it leads with, who it invites into the studio, which detail it emphasises. That is the natural work of any newsroom. But a viewer who follows a single source does not see the frame — they take it for «the event itself».

Following the same event from two or three different sources solves that problem. And this is where IPTV has a practical advantage: the channels sit side by side in one list, and switching is one click. Many of our subscribers do exactly that — during an important event they move back and forth between two news channels.

The three-source rule

On an important event, open a local, a Turkish and an international channel in turn. Seeing three different frames teaches more than any commentary.

A difference in immediacy

Rolling news channels (Euronews, Россия 24) cycle through the agenda — even if you join late you catch the main stories.

A difference in language

The same event is reported with a different emphasis in English, Turkish and Russian. If you know the languages, that is an extra source of information.

HEVC news streams — for a weak connection

The Turkish channels category holds HEVC variants of the news channels: TRT Haber HEVC, CNN Turk HEVC, NTV HEVC, A Haber HEVC, Haber Turk HEVC, Haber Global HEVC, Halk TV HEVC and Sözcü TV HEVC.

HEVC (H.265) is the new compression standard: it carries the same quality on roughly half the bandwidth. For news channels that is very convenient, because a studio picture is static and compression artefacts do not show. If your connection is weak, opening the news channels in their HEVC variant is the right choice.

If HEVC will not open

For an HEVC stream the device has to support that codec. On older Android boxes and on some televisions made before 2015 the channel may not open, or may give sound only. In that case you choose the ordinary HD variant of the same channel — both variants are in the package. We check which one works on your device during the installation. In detail: the quality marks explained.

Latency in a live broadcast

On a news channel latency matters for a different reason than in sport. Breaking news arriving seconds late changes nothing for an ordinary viewer. But for someone who follows a live broadcast for work — a journalist, a broker, an interpreter — that gap is felt.

The reason is the technical structure: the broadcast is cut into small video segments, uploaded to a server, and your device gathers them into a buffer and plays them. Without the buffer the picture would break at every small network jump. A few seconds of difference compared with satellite is normal, and it is the same with every IPTV service.

  • To reduce latency, a cable connection is more effective than Wi-Fi.
  • Shrinking the buffer size in the app reduces latency, but on a weak connection it raises the risk of freezing — you find the balance yourself.
  • Because an HEVC stream needs less bandwidth, it runs more stably and with fewer breaks on a weak connection.
  • If you want the live broadcast on one screen and the text news on a second, you need the multi-device plan.

A practical setup for everyday use

1

Gather three channels into favourites

One local, one Turkish, one international. During an important event, moving between the three sources takes seconds.

2

Pick a rolling channel for the morning

Channels of the Euronews and Россия 24 type cycle through the agenda — over your morning coffee you catch all the main stories.

3

Keep a separate channel for the economy

It is convenient to keep the Bloomberg HT stream aside for exchange rates and market news.

4

Switch to the HEVC variant on a weak connection

The HEVC stream of a news channel uses less bandwidth; with a studio picture there is no visible difference in quality.

An overview of all the categories is on the channels page, and the installation steps are on the installation page.

Frequently asked questions

Which news channels are available?

The news category lists 16 channels: the local ARB 24 and Real TV, the Turkish TRT Haber, CNN Türk, NTV, HaberTürk, Haber Global, A Haber, Sözcü TV, the business channel Bloomberg HT, and the international CNN International, BBC World News, Sky News, Al Jazeera, France 24 and Euronews.

Does a news channel arrive with a delay?

Yes, there is a delay of a few seconds — and it is the same with every IPTV service. The broadcast is cut into small segments, and your device gathers them into a buffer and plays them; the buffer is what keeps the picture from breaking. To reduce latency, use a cable connection and shrink the buffer size in the app. For ordinary viewing the gap is not noticeable.

What advantage does an HEVC news channel give?

HEVC (H.265) carries the same quality on roughly half the bandwidth. For news channels that is an ideal match, because a studio picture is static and compression artefacts do not show. On a weak connection the HEVC variant runs more stably. The condition: the device must support HEVC — on older boxes you choose the ordinary HD variant.

Is there a news channel in English?

Yes — CNN International, BBC World News, Sky News, Al Jazeera and France 24 broadcast in English. Among the Azerbaijani channels, AnewZ also covers the regional agenda in English. News channels are convenient for language learners: the reports repeat through the day and the vocabulary stays within a steady range.

Which are the Azerbaijani news channels?

In the open list ARB 24 and Real TV are in the news category, while AnewZ is in the Azerbaijani category. Beyond those there are the news bulletins of general channels such as AzTV, İctimai TV, Space TV, Baku TV and APA TV — those are in the Azerbaijani channels group.

Can I watch two news channels at the same time?

One subscription code works on one screen at a time, but switching between channels is a single click — in practice that is enough for comparing sources. If you really need to watch in parallel (for work, in a newsroom), the 2-device plan is 18 AZN a month; for three or more screens there is a 22 AZN plan.
